DCE-MRI Monitoring of Pc4-mediated Photodynamic Therapy
Recently we have had success with DCE-MRI tracking Pc4-mediated photodynamic therapy. There have been significant changes in MRI signal in the tumor region post-PDT compared with controls. The magnitude of the changes is partially Gadolinium dose dependent and a correlation with histology is being demonstrated in a paper soon to be published
18F-FDG PET Monitoring of Pc4-mediated Photodynamic Therapy
Our initial trials utilized 18F-FDG PET for tracking Pc4 PDT success. However, we encountered many issues with this technique. Limited resolution in the PET scans limited our study of the glioblastoma undergoing treatment. More importantly 18F-FDG signal was actually found to increase post-PDT. This is thought to be a kinetics issue related to PDT destruction of the blood brain barrier leading to leakage of the tracer from the intravascular compartment into the necrosed tumor region.
Multimodality Coregistration with Histology for Therapy Monitoring
In order to assure that the imaging modality is representing the therapeutic endpoint properly the brains were processed for histology and the sections scanned and imported into Amira® (TGS Inc.). The histological sections were compiled into a 3D volume and coregistered with the imaging modality.

Minimally Invasive MR-guided Ablation of the Tongue Base
After working in Dr. Dean's Lab for close to 4yrs I wanted another perspective on the field of Radiology and the chance to learn more about interventional radiology and MRI. Dr. Nour welcomed me into his group and I started by assisting him with the laser ablation procedures, animal care, and image acquisition. The research was focused on the efficacy and safety of tongue base laser ablation to increase the caliber of the oropharynx as treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. After the data collection, I was responsible for the analytical methodology and the analysis itself. I also reconstructed the data for display and provided several 3D animations of the results.
